Chicago shows it cares about tryouts

jonesWATERFORD, Conn. — At a confab of critics, young and ancient, here at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, the question about Chicago's role as the tryout capital of theatrical America kept coming up.  "How should you review pre-Broadway shows?"  I kept being asked.  "Surely, Chicago audiences don't care that these shows still have work to be done."

Wrong.  They care deeply.  Why have people been sending me reviews all week of "The Last Ship"?
