IATSE Pride Town Hall Registration – 5/22/20

IATSE Pride Committee Update

May 15, 2020

Pride Mailing List

We have now set up our mailing list on the Action Network platform, which is what the IATSE Communications Department uses for its email blasts. Going forward, emails from the IATSE Pride Committee will use this format, so please ensure to add iatsepride@iatse.net to your safe senders list. We want to be mindful not to spam you with too many emails, however, for the next little while you can expect an email approximately every two weeks. The emails will contain the registration links for the biweekly Town Halls we have begun hosting. We want to ensure that anyone who has signed up for the mailing list gets a head start on registering.

Inaugural IATSE Pride Town Hall

On Friday, May 8th, we held our very first IATSE Pride Town Hall. We made the decision to keep it casual, without a theme, in order to introduce the Committee and gauge interest in the idea of consistent Town Halls. We ended up filling up our 100 spots and had to re-open registration resulting in almost 200 attendees registering! We also opened with a special guest speaker, International President Matthew D. Loeb, who greeted all the sisters, brothers and kin in attendance, and shared his pronouns.

Based on a poll we took during the Town Hall, we had approximately 80% self-identified LGBTQ+ attendees and 20% allies, with approximately 70% of attendees being American and 30% being Canadian.

After the Town Hall, we sent out an optional survey where attendees could tell us what worked, what needed improvement, and any ideas for future sessions. We had some really positive feedback, with the top positives being President Loeb’s encouraging words, the mix of fun and serious questions/topics, and the general feeling of solidarity with the community. We had allowed 90 mins for the session, but we received a few suggestions that attendees would prefer it be one hour so we will try that for our next session.

Upcoming IATSE Pride Town Hall

Our second IATSE Pride Town Hall will take place on Friday, May 22 at 2:00pm EDT (11:00am PDT). The topic will be Mental Health & Wellness and we will be joined by a very special guest speaker, Nneka Symister. Nneka is the Healthcare Coordinator for IATSE Local One. Please see a quick bio from her below:

“I recently joined the Local One family after working most recently as a social worker at Montefiore Hospital and a psychotherapist at the Seleni Institute, and bring with me over 15 years of experience working in healthcare throughout NYC. I am a licensed clinical social worker who has extensive experience working with people impacted by mental illness, medical issues and substance abuse. I am here to ensure that all your medical and mental health needs are being met, and will be focused on helping us improve our overall wellness, recognizing that all aspect of our lives and healthcare are interrelated.”

Nneka has been assisting the local in dealing with the challenges of being isolated, the sense of the loss of community and the feelings of despair brought on by the pandemic. Questions can be asked during the Town Hall, but, if you’d like you can submit a question in advance by emailing the Pride Committee. Questions will be presented anonymously unless the sender specifically chooses to be named.
