Get a behind the scenes look at the workshop where Local 52 members are constructing life-saving intubation boxes.
On 5/13/2020 -- NBC Covered Bret Lehne and his crew from IATSE Local 52, a group of scenic carpenters. Usually, they make the sets and furniture you'll see in films and on television programs. With large scale productions at a total standstill, Bret realized that he and his friends had the skills, time, and tools in the union workshop to make intubation boxes -- protective equipment that can provide medical personnel with an added line of defense during the installation or removal of a ventilator when treating COVID-19 patients. So far, they've raised over 10,000 dollars through a crowdfunding site, and built and donated over 60 boxes so far. The majority have been donated to greater NYC hospital systems but some have been shipped as far as Georgia.
