Oppose Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court

As a follow-up to the AFL-CIO petition drive posted last week ...

Sisters and Brothers,

Right now, there’s a lot of uncertainty about future policies that will affect working people and labor unions.  I ask that you read the letter below from the AFL-CIO, then take action to keep a corporate justice off the Supreme Court.

In Solidarity,

Matthew D. Loeb
IATSE International President

Hearings began in the Senate last week on President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Judge Neil Gorsuch.

In the coming years, the Supreme Court is going to be taking up important cases that will have a huge effect on working people’s right to stand together in a union to improve their workplaces, fight discrimination in the workplace, and be safe on the job.  After listening to Gorsuch’s answers during his hearing and reviewing his record, it’s clear he will put the interests of corporations before those of working people.

Call your Senators and tell them to oppose Neil Gorsuch's nomination to the Supreme Court:

If nominated, Gorsuch would:

•Weaken worker protections. Gorsuch opposes Supreme Court rulings that empower federal agencies to enforce worker protections. (Newsweek, 1/27/17)

•Fight to give corporations greater protections in court. Gorsuch argued for courts to protect corporations from class-action lawsuits by individual consumers, even in in cases of securities fraud.  (Washington Legal Foundation, April 2005).

•Reject discrimination claims and dismiss workers’ efforts to secure earned wages and benefits.  Gorsuch ruled against a truck driver who was fired after refusing to drive an unsafe vehicle or wait in freezing temperatures for road assistance to arrive—despite six other judges upholding the driver’s claim.  (TransAm Trucking, Inc. v. Administrative Review Board, U.S. Department of Labor, 833 F.3d 1206 [10th 2016])

We need justices who understand the importance of helping working people to create a better life for themselves and their families, not make it harder by giving corporations more power.

If we let Gorsuch’s nomination go unopposed, we can count on rulings that will set back our communities for generations. It’s up to us to stop him right now.
