Today, we celebrate and honor workers

Today is Labor Day, one of my favorite days of the year. Today is all about the working class, the people who keep our city and state moving no matter what, the women and men who are the backbone of Chicago and beyond.

Of course, this Labor Day is unlike any other.

The past year has been extremely challenging for all of us. Yet through it all, union members have continued to serve their communities and get the job done — even while risking their lives and livelihoods. Sadly, many have fallen ill and some have passed away. Today, we honor their sacrifice and recommit ourselves our movement and the fight for social, economic, and racial justice for all.

At the CFL, we celebrated our annual Labor Day event a bit differently this year, holding an online event instead of our usual luncheon. If you haven't watched it yet, you can still view the event at

The theme for our work in the coming year is Beyond Essential. You'll see the #BeyondEssential hashtag online and elsewhere as we share the stories of the people who have kept our city and county moving under unimaginable conditions. Please, join us in highlighting those workers who are #BeyondEssential — as well as the unions who support them.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day, and thank you for everything you do to stand up for workers and the women and men of the labor movement.

In Solidarity,

Bob Reiter
